In college I was involved with a campus group.\u00a0 Every so often we would host our brother or sister chapters from other campuses.\u00a0 One week my roommates and I were asked to host a group from UC San Diego.\u00a0 Being a house full of teenage males, we really wanted to impress the group from SD; mainly because girls were coming.\u00a0 We had a roommate meeting and decided to go all out\u2026 BBQ Steak Dinner!\u00a0\u00a0No cheap\u00a0burgers or hot dogs at this party.\u00a0 Steak was the plan.\u00a0 There was just one problem.\u00a0 I was a 19 year old video store clerk working for minimum wage and a couple of my roommates were barely making rent with their financial aid checks.\u00a0 Whether it was ego or the allure of impressing the ladies, we still decided to serve steaks.\u00a0 (I promise I\u2019m going somewhere with this story)<\/em><\/p>\n

I drove to our local supermarket and started looking at the filet mignon, porterhouse, and beautifully marbled rib-eye steaks.\u00a0 They were marvelous cuts, but they were expensive.\u00a0 Not knowing much about cuts of meat, I looked over and saw the packages of top round.\u00a0 These were cut into very large steaks at a fraction of the price.\u00a0 As a bachelor on a tight budget, the choice was simple\u2026 I loaded up the shopping cart with top round steak.<\/p>\n

The night of the BBQ had arrived.\u00a0 Our house was packed with about 30 guests.\u00a0 I vividly remember\u00a0carrying a stacked tray of seasoned steaks on my way to the grill to the \u201cooohs\u201d and \u201caaahs\u201d of the crowd.\u00a0 Yes, I was a rockstar.\u00a0 I grilled the steaks and dinner was served.\u00a0 All the hungry guests grabbed a paper plate and plastic utensils to dig in.\u00a0 Within seconds there was the sound of plastic forks and knives snapping into pieces.\u00a0 The few souls unlucky enough to actually cut a bite sized morsel of leather<\/span> steak were left chewing on it like a cow chewing cud.\u00a0 The lesson of the day:\u00a0 it\u2019s not about \u201cexpensive\u201d or \u201cinexpensive\u201d.\u00a0 It\u2019s about \u201ccheap\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cCheap\u201d is a word that is too often defined as \u201cinexpensive\u201d.\u00a0 This is a mistake.\u00a0 The top round steak was both cheap and inexpensive (you get what you pay for).\u00a0 Some things can be cheap and expensive (Rip Offs).\u00a0 Other things can be inexpensive but not cheap (Value).\u00a0 But generally speaking, things that are not cheap are almost always expensive.\u00a0 A lot of people we speak to feel internet marketing is, or should be, \u201ccheap\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0 Let me dissect this by splitting up the word \u201ccheap\u201d into two camps:<\/p>\n

First, cheap is defined as low quality.\u00a0 Search engine marketing (SEM) is highly targeted, easily trackable, and nimbly scalable.\u00a0 When you understand SEM and fully digest the proper keyword strategies, it becomes the highest quality advertising medium available today.\u00a0 High quality is NOT \u201ccheap\u201d.\u00a0 Thus SEM is not cheap.<\/p>\n

Second, \u201ccheap\u201d is often interchanged with \u201cinexpensive\u201d.\u00a0 I\u2019m generally defining expensive as \u2018high perceived price tag\u2019 and inexpensive as \u2018low perceived price tag.\u2019\u00a0 My experience working in 2 dot-com\u2019s and 2 traditional companies taught me that good advertising always seems \u201cexpensive.\u201d\u00a0 Sure I can send mailers out to a small handful of zip codes for less money, or set a very low daily budget in my PPC campaign but I\u2019ve realized advertising generally takes a significant investment to do it properly; and reap the full potential benefits.\u00a0 Print costs alone for a small, local circulation will run well over a thousand per month.\u00a0 Relative ad costs are the same online.\u00a0 Expensive or inexpensive, advertising is an investment.\u00a0 Solid advertising investments always seem nerverackingly \u201cexpensive\u201d at first, but once you receive a positive ROI it magically seems \u201cinexpensive\u201d after all.<\/p>\n

The truth is Internet Marketing is not cheap (low quality).\u00a0 When done properly it is an efficient, high quality channel to gain new business.\u00a0 Much like a first class airline seat, a luxury car, or a Rib Eye steak, quality is rarely cheap or inexpensive.\u00a0 However, the benefits usually outweigh the cost when done right.\u00a0 Many SMB\u2019s find it tough to invest hundreds or even thousands of dollars into their advertising.\u00a0 I empathize with you.\u00a0 However I encourage you to lower risk by exploring your options and chasing the higher quality ad channels to ensure you get a positive ROI.\u00a0 Avoid the cheap ad channels\u2026 and by cheap I mean low quality.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cCheap\u201d just leads to broken plastic forks and a lot of painful chewing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
