I was watching the latest episode of Donald Trump\u2019s \u201cThe Apprentice\u201d on Sunday night and was intrigued by two multi-gold medalists, Summer Sanders and Michael Johnson, facing off as Project Managers.\u00a0 FWIW, I was just as intrigued by Donald\u2019s awful comb-over.\u00a0 The guest judge for the project was Gavin Maloof, owner of the Palms Casino, Sacramento Kings, and countless marketing ventures.\u00a0 The task at hand was to create an Advertorial for the new Norton-LifeLock bundle package.\u00a0 It was interesting to watch the two teams take opposite approaches to the task.\u00a0 As an aside, an Advertorial is:<\/p>\n

Advertorial = Advertisement + Editorial<\/p>\n

Michael Johnson\u2019s team put together a ton of wordy content in very small font.\u00a0 Gavin Maloof’s criticism really stood out to me as a marketer.\u00a0 He shared that the advertorial was too\u00a0verbose so nobody would read through it.\u00a0 His two key points were a) you only have 2 or 3 seconds to grab a reader\u2019s attention and b) there was way too much copy for an advertorial.\u00a0 In summary, Michael Johnson\u2019s team followed the equation:\u00a0 Advertorial = Advertisement <\/span>+ Editorial<\/p>\n

Summer Sander\u2019s team put together an advertorial with full sized images on each page and very little ad copy.\u00a0 The pictures themselves were compelling and well put together, however Norton-LifeLock representatives and Gavin had a major concern\u2026 there was no phone number!\u00a0 The Print looked great but there was no way for potential customers to contact the company.\u00a0 In the end, Summer ended up with an off equation: Advertorial = Advertisement + Editorial<\/span><\/p>\n

Camp Michael \u2013 <\/strong>Too Much Copy<\/strong><\/em>:\u00a0 Some websites contain so much copy and content it loses the attention of the visitor.\u00a0 Gavin was right when he said we only have a couple seconds to capture someone\u2019s attention.\u00a0 If your website is too wordy, people will click the \u2018Back\u2019 button and leave before you have a chance to sell them.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Camp Summer \u2013 <\/strong>No Call to Action<\/strong><\/em>: We have seen many aesthetically pleasing websites without a call to action.\u00a0 If you offer a service, your phone number or\u00a0contact info should be strategically placed on each and every page of your site.\u00a0 If you sell a product, you should have an easy to navigate shopping platform and eye catching messages such as \u201cFree Shipping if you buy now!\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
