Commercial phone book: \u201cDid you hear that?\u00a0 It came from the haunted house!\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Residential phone book:\u00a0 \u201cWe need to go in and investigate.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Commercial phone book: \u201cNo way man.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Residential phone book:\u00a0 \u201cWhat\u2019s the matter?\u00a0 You yellow?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n

Ok, sorry for the silly joke.\u00a0 What\u2019s even sillier is the huge stacks of phone books delivered to my condo building every year.\u00a0 I live in a rather large development so there are enough phone books in the mail room to easily fill 2 pallets.\u00a0 These phone books sit idle, wrapped in plastic, hoping for someone take them home.\u00a0 Week after week these things sit there untouched.\u00a0 The only time I was tempted to pick one up was when I needed paper to ignite my charcoal chimney (that\u2019s right folks, real men bbq with coals, not gas).<\/p>\n

Well it looks like this nuisance is coming to an end.\u00a0 At the end of 2010, Verizon Communications received permission from New York, Pennsylvania and Florida (with Virginia pending) to stop distributing phone books.\u00a0 This is a milestone that is far overdue. \u00a0I don’t remember the last time I heard anyone say “check the phone book” when they needed a phone number. \u00a0Nowadays, all you hear is “Google it” or “check Bing.” \u00a0When you need to find someone or something, you can find it much faster online and get more information than you would in a phone book.\u00a0 (Don\u2019t believe me?\u00a0 Go to www.Spokeo.com<\/a> and search for your own name.)\u00a0 On top of that, phone books only record information in your local area while the internet provides access to people around the world.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0The bottom line is very few people depend on the yellow or white pages so I fully expect to see this trend continue. \u00a0\u00a0My only question is:\u00a0 What took so long?<\/p>\n

We\u2019re seeing a similar shift in newsprint.\u00a0 Advertising in phone books and newspapers are down as these companies try to figure out how to monetize their online assets.\u00a0 Advertisers are shifting their budgets online.\u00a0 Newsprint and phone books need ad revenue to survive so we\u2019ll see how they continue to evolve.<\/p>\n

My favorite benefit of eliminating the yellow and white?\u00a0 We\u2019re going more green.<\/p>\n
