My big sis is 2 years older than me.\u00a0 Her first summer in Jr. High marked the start of her road to independence.\u00a0 She wanted to hang out with her clique of friends rather than with the family.\u00a0 She wanted to go to the mall to see and be seen.\u00a0 Her daily schedule was to wake up to do her hair (white Aqua Net spray can, bangs teased really high\u2026 it was 1986), try on 8 different outfits before \u201csettling\u201d for one, and then would call her posse to come over and hang out at the house (we were latch key kids so we had the house to ourselves).\u00a0 On any given day we had at least half a dozen of her friends over.\u00a0 As a little 5th<\/sup> grader I was content spending my days playing Atari 2600.\u00a0 However this summer was different.\u00a0 Whenever the \u201cbig\u201d 7th<\/sup> & 8th<\/sup> grade boys would come over they decided it would be fun to pick on me.\u00a0 Day in and day out they would pick fights with me, tease me, and try to bully me around.\u00a0 I had no choice but to take it like a man.\u00a0 If you have an older sibling, you know what I mean when I say I hated them.<\/p>\n

Years later we started becoming good friends.\u00a0 They still picked on me but it was more of a big brother-little brother relationship.\u00a0 Then a funny thing happened.\u00a0 I hit my growth spurt.\u00a0 It soon dawned on me that I was taller and stronger than some of them.\u00a0 When they picked on me I began to fight back\u2026 and win.\u00a0 There were other guys who were bigger and stronger than me but one by one, little by little, I began to hold my ground against the older brothers.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Well it looks like the little search bro (Bing) may be growing up.\u00a0 Last month Nielsen announced that Bing finally surpassed Yahoo! in US search volume with a share of 13.9%.\u00a0 Yahoo dipped to 13.1%.\u00a0 Of course it all depends on who you ask and how you measure market share.\u00a0 Calculating search market share is a lot like rating the best steakhouse\u2026 everybody\u2019s rating system is slightly different.\u00a0 For example, comScore still has Yahoo well ahead of Bing in search volume by a hefty 6% margin.\u00a0 Without getting into an argument about which source is the most accurate, I\u2019d like to focus on the one common theme amongst all the search rankings:\u00a0 Bing is growing.\u00a0 Bing has been growing consistently all year.\u00a0 Bing, IMO, will continue to grow.\u00a0 I remember just last year how people were writing off Microsoft as a major search player.\u00a0 My how quickly this industry changes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This may not seem like a big deal to the general public but if you\u2019ve followed the search industry for a while, I\u2019m sure you understand the impact.\u00a0 Google and Yahoo! have held their ground in the #1 & #2 spots for a number of years now.\u00a0 For years the two have been battling for users like \u201cKate plus 8\u201d and \u201cthe Real Housewives\u201d battle for reality show viewers.\u00a0 Replacing Yahoo! as #2 is like switching Batman\u2019s Robin or the Lone Rangers Tonto.\u00a0 The questions have always been a Yahoo! vs. Google debate.\u00a0 MSN has been an afterthought for quite some time.\u00a0 If Google is the head cheerleader and prom queen, then Yahoo! is the well known student body president.\u00a0 MSN?\u00a0 MSN was always that quiet, shy, nerdy girl with coke bottle glasses who you would only acknowledge when you needed to copy homework.\u00a0 Well guess what folks?\u00a0 That quiet, nerdy girl just got Lasik, has been hitting the gym for a year, and got accepted into an Ivy League school\u2026 keep an eye out because she may transform into someone very powerful.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The idea of turning the \u201cMSN search engine\u201d into the \u201cBing Decision Engine\u201d may be a matter of semantics to some.\u00a0 Others may find that Microsoft has successfully reverse engineered the search process to deliver much better results.\u00a0 Who knows, it could just be the multi-million dollar advertising campaign to promote Bing.\u00a0 Whatever they did is working.\u00a0 They are growing consistently and that is the ultimate goal.<\/p>\n
